Data from Oxygen Finance shows that the 2021/22 Financial Year saw local authority spending on buildings-related services rise by 7.25% to reach £18.49m – its highest level since our records began 10 years ago, according to Oxygen’s Martin Holmes. Carbon emissions associated with this market also increased, rising by 9.2% to reach 7.9m tonnes.
Oxygen’s Insights Spend, which provides the leading source of UK public sector spend data, reveals that spend on property maintenance services represents the largest council outlay within the Buildings market, with spend on these services rising by just over 18% in 21/22 to reach £4.37bn. Property construction is the second largest area of spend and saw an increase of 11.2% in 21/22, reaching £3.56bn.
All Top Five Suppliers Saw Local Authority Earnings Increase
Aside from spend relating to energy and utilities, carbon emissions within the local authority Buildings market are also led by property construction and property maintenance services respectively. The year 21/22 saw emissions relating to council property construction services increase by almost 12% to reach 1.32m tonnes, while property maintenance emissions increased by just under 18% to 1.09m tonnes.
Each of the top five suppliers in the local authority Buildings market increased their council earnings in 21/22, with Willmott Dixon climbing to the top of the pile overall after its earnings in this market rose by over 34%. The majority of local authority spend with Willmott Dixon in 21/22 was on property construction services, with Wates Group finishing the year as the leading provider of council property maintenance services.
